Tue, February 17, 2004 - 11:52 AMI'm Dr., and I'd be happy to offer a second opinion regarding Anna's prescription. It's true, waffles are clinically demonstrated to lift the mood of the depressed individual.
Some patients respond better to blueberries or bananas rather than raspberries. -

Warning: waffles are habit-forming. Prolonged use can lead to weight gain.
Finally, waffles are not recommended for those with blood sugar disorders such as diabetes and hypoglycemia. -

Tue, February 17, 2004 - 12:51 PMHigh carb/sugar foods stimulate the production of insulin, which is bad for hypoglycemics. A common result is that the hypoglycemic individual suffers a "sugar low" a half hour to an hour after eating sweets or carbs.
Hypoglycemics should eat a balanced diet with more protein than the average. A high sugar diet will tend to make the condition worse rather than better, especially over time. The body doesn't like being subjected to those extremes. A small dose of waffles (no syrup) is allowed, but who can eat a small dose of waffles?!
I know all this because I have a mild case of hypoglycemia myself. I've never been diagnosed, but I have all the symptoms.

"The dietary treatment for hypoglycemia is slightly reduced carbohydrates (50% of calories), slightly increased protein (20% of calories) and six small meals per day. With a regular meal pattern, your hypoglycemic symptoms should lessen and you will probably feel better. This diet is very similar to a diabetic diet that does not include sweets or sugars. Two 4" pancakes or 2 frozen round waffles are allowed and can be exchanged for 2 starch breads for breakfast, but no syrup. Try fresh fruit (1/4 to 1/2 cup) on the pancakes or waffles instead." -

What I recommend is eating the waffles, and then once you feel better, exercising which will also help as long as as you find an excercise you like to do....biking, dancing around, whatever. That way you can eat more waffles and remain slim.
